Our physical spaces have reopened to staff and students only. We strongly recommend that everyone wears a mask in Library spaces. Library services are also available online to support you.

Conditions of entry in Library spaces

Please note: We strongly recommend that everyone wears a mask in Library spaces.

To enter the Library, you must:

  • Swipe in with your student or staff card for record keeping
  • Use hand sanitiser when you enter the space
  • Wash your hands regularly throughout the day
  • Wipe table and keyboard surfaces with disinfectant wipes before and after using equipment
  • Practise physical distancing by maintaining 1.5m distance from others, and not moving furniture
  • Only approach staff at the information desks during in-person hours
  • Eat hot food outside the Library
  • Follow instructions as signposted or given by staff or security.

Due to the current risk of infection from COVID-19 during this pandemic, you must not enter the Library if:

  • you have COVID-19
  • you are a close contact of someone with COVID-19
  • you are required to self-isolate in accordance with advice from NSW Health and other Australian government health authorities
  • you have been tested for COVID-19 and are awaiting results, or
  • you’re currently experiencing a fever, shortness of breath, or any flu-like symptoms such as coughing, sore throat or fatigue.

Library service changes and updates

Library locations

Library locations are open to current University of Sydney students and staff only (valid University ID is required). Conditions of entry will apply, including 1.5m physical distancing and limited maximum occupancy displayed at entrances.

  • Fisher Library is open 24/7. The Fisher Information Desk is open 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday; and 10am to 2pm on Saturday.
  • The Law Library is open 24/7. Please enter through Fisher Library only. The Law Information Desk is open 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday
  • Susan Wakil Health Building Library levels 2 and 3 are open 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. The 24/7 study space on level 1 is open to University of Sydney students and staff via swipe access.
  • Camden Commons is open 24/7.
  • The Quarter is open 24/7 for postgraduate coursework students only.
  • SciTech Library and the Conservatorium of Music Library are open from 10 to 4pm, Monday to Friday.
  • ThinkSpace, a tech haven for staff and students, is accessible by appointment only between 12 and 4pm.
  • CreateSpace is open 9am to 8pm, Monday to Friday. Library staff are available for support to use equipment and manage bookings from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Technology equipment, video and podcast studios close at 5pm.
  • Rare Books and Special Collections Reading Room is open 11am to 3pm, by appointment only, for staff and students. Make a booking through Library Search.
  • Bookable meeting rooms are available in open Library locations, subject to conditions of entry and maximum occupancy limits.

  • The expiration date of all alumni and community borrower Library memberships that were due to expire between 1 February 2020 to 30 December 2020 have been extended to 31 December 2021.

Help from Library staff

Access to resources

  • Borrowing of physical resources (books, scores, etc) has resumed across library locations for University of Sydney staff and students only.
  • Materials in the short loan collection will be available for loan for up to 4 hours.
  • Items are quarantined for a minimum of 24 hours on return.
  • Bookings for items in the short loan collection may be affected by the 24-hour quarantine period required for all recently returned items. This means some items may not be available at the scheduled time or will be unavailable for 24 hours. Check Library Search or contact the Library for the current status of the item.
  • The Library’s extensive electronic collection of more than 1 million scholarly ejournals and ebooks continues to be available 24/7 from any location worldwide. Get help accessing the Library’s eResources.

Borrowing terms (returns, fees, requests and recalls)

  • Due dates, requests and recalls, and fees for lost items have been reinstated as normal. Use My account to see the items you have on loan, when they’re due or to renew.
  • You can return books at any library during opening hours. After hours, you will be able to return at Fisher and SciTech libraries via the external returns chute.
  • Resource Sharing (borrowing from another library) of physical items between the University of Sydney and other libraries has resumed. However, there are still significant restrictions impacting other institutions sharing their physical resources which may cause ongoing delays in borrowing. If you would like to request a renewal, please do so via My Account or email so that we can contact the lending institution to extend your loan.

Ordering and acquisitions

  • Orders may be delayed due to shipping from overseas.


  • All equipment borrowing (Zoom recorders, physiotherapy tables, staplers, stationery, headphones, laptop chargers, calculators, etc) is suspended until further notice.
  • Use of all ThinkSpace equipment is limited to appointments only. No walk-ins allowed during this time.
  • CreateSpace equipment, audio and video studios are available from 9am to 5pm.
  • Printing and copying is available in all libraries during opening hours for University of Sydney staff and students. Printing and copying is also available in Learning Hubs for University of Sydney staff and students.

Events and workshops

  • All in-person workshops and events have been suspended until further notice.
  • A series of online workshops are available to help you stay connected with others, study effectively, meet friends and learn new skills.

  • PeerConnect

    Video chat or instant message Peer Learning Advisor (PLA) anytime Mon-Fri 12pm–4pm.
    There’s no need to book or sign up. Just drop in!
    The Peer Learning Advisors can provide support with study, looking after yourself, letting you know about other support services and general tips around uni life. They can also just be a friendly ear for a chat.

The Library is here to support your research and access to materials.

  • Academic Liaison Librarians are available for online and in-person consultations to support your research. They can help you with finding information, citation metrics reporting and strategic publishing.
  • The Library hosts a range of online workshops via Zoom.


The Library is here to support your teaching and can help you make coursework material available to your students online.

  • Academic Liaison Librarians are available to support your teaching, and can help you to locate teaching resources, deliver training, or advise on embedding information literacy skills into your unit of study. They can also assist you in finding alternate digital resources.
  • Borrowing of physical resources (books, scores, films, microfiche etc) has resumed at Fisher and Law libraries. Items can be requested from other library locations via Library Search to be picked up and borrowed at Fisher Library.
  • The loan period for physical items has been extended to 4 hours and items are being quarantined for 24 hours on return.
  • Please submit your Unit of Study reading lists for Summer intensives and Semester 1, 2021 subjects to be made available to students via Canvas.
  • The Library is currently transitioning to a new Reading Lists system commencing in Semester 1, 2021. Summer intensives will be delivered through our current system eReserve.
  • Students are finding it increasingly hard to access physical materials in our library spaces. It is recommended that course reading lists be reviewed to include minimal physical materials, as access to these items will be limited. You can contact your Academics Liaison Librarian to find alternative content.
  • We are still experiencing delays with physical material being delivered, so please ensure that you place any orders through our online form as soon as possible.
